The Feldenkrais Method Is More Than Movement…

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais created the “Method “by blending science with a personal evolution.   Of course, each person’s evolution will be unique to them, given our distinctive DNA, past learning  and our own unique environment.  Through a combination of his scientific background in physics and  his martial arts expertise, interwoven with his empirical understanding of biomechanics, learning and childhood development. Feldenkrais guided his students into an understanding of the unity of mind and body,  reacting in harmony to each other.  This unification leads  to a well differentiated pathway and choices of movement that could  translate to personal freedom and wholeness.  His aim was to restore each of us to our  potential and  regain our human dignity.

What Is Feldenkrais?


First let’s explain how to pronounce the name. Feldenkrais sounds  like Feldenkrise. The Feldenkrais® Method combines your focused awareness while you are doing unique and varied movements within your comfort range. The slower you go, the more you sense. The more you sense, the more ease you may feel in your movements.

There are  intermittent resting periods throughout the lesson. These rests are crucial in your journey of sensing your physical body and the differences that can occur with  focused attention on your movements. These rests allow a dialogue between your nervous system and muscular system, creating  a new loop in the mind-body dialogue.  

Today, scientists call this process “neuroplasticity” which you may have heard  about, as there are numerous  articles and books on the subject.  Neuroplasticity is the brain’s amazing ability to create new neural pathways throughout our entire lives, as we gain new  understandings and ways of doing things. With our newfound realization of  more efficient movement patterns, we create new options for ourselves, allowing more choices that can improve the quality of not only our movement, but of our lives as well.

Lessons are done to facilitate awareness of the whole person - their movements, feelings, thoughts and sensations - opening the door to improvement and a felt sense of unity of one's mind and body. This focused attention to movement can influence all the other components as well. It is this relationship of inner organization, awareness and unity that makes this modality so much more than a movement lesson. It can be transformational. Each of us is on our unique journey of self-discovery within our Feldenkrais community with other like-minded travelers.  

The Feldenkrais Method is a window to our awareness of how we move, permitting a greater ease of movement that may unfurl our enthusiasm for life.

What Is The Format?


There are two different modalities in this method. Movement lessons, called Awareness Through Movement®  (“ATM” ® ) that you can do in class, online or  by listening to a recording in various configurations, but usually on the floor.  The second modality is Functional Integration (“FI”), The FI  sessions consist of a one-on-one, hands-on approach with Jacquelyn, typically while you  lie on a table. Both modalities involve movements with focused awareness to provide a learning process for more coordinated and efficient movement.  The goal is a more flexible mind for a smarter body.
